Health and Safety policy
Hounslow Removals Health And Safety Policy
Hounslow Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with removals, packing, loading, transport and delivery of goods. Our aim is to prevent injury, protect health and promote safe working practices at all times across our service area.
Policy Statement And Objectives
Our objective is to conduct all removals activities in a way that minimises risks to people, property and the environment. We will comply with applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards. Hounslow Removals will continually review and improve its systems to achieve high standards of safety and wellbeing for staff and customers.
We will provide appropriate resources, information, training and supervision to ensure that health and safety considerations are integral to planning and carrying out every move. Safe working is a condition of employment and a core expectation of everyone representing Hounslow Removals.
Management Responsibilities
The management team at Hounslow Removals has overall responsibility for implementing this Health and Safety Policy and ensuring that adequate arrangements are in place to control risks. Management will:
Plan removal operations with safety as a priority, including route planning, vehicle loading and access checks at collection and delivery addresses. Provide and maintain safe vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order. Ensure that lifting equipment and vehicles are regularly inspected and maintained.
Develop and maintain safe systems of work for all key tasks, including lifting, carrying, loading, unloading and securing items in vehicles. Make sure all staff receive training and instructions on these systems and that they are followed in practice.
Carry out and record suitable and proportionate risk assessments for activities at customers properties, storage locations and during transport. Take appropriate actions to remove or reduce any identified risks and communicate these actions to those affected.
Investigate incidents, accidents and near misses, identify root causes and implement corrective measures. Use findings to improve training, procedures and planning for future removal work.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees and contractors of Hounslow Removals share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Every member of staff must:
Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of colleagues, customers and the public who may be affected by their actions. Follow all safety procedures, instructions, signage and training given by the company.
Use vehicles, tools, lifting aids, personal protective equipment and other resources in accordance with training and manufacturer guidance. Report any defects, damage or concerns immediately so they can be rectified before work continues.
Cooperate fully with management on all matters relating to health and safety, including attendance at training, toolbox talks and briefings before complex or large removals. Never attempt tasks for which they have not been trained or authorised, particularly where heavy lifting or equipment operation is involved.
Report accidents, near misses, hazards and unsafe conditions to their line manager promptly, even if no injury or damage has occurred. Early reporting allows the company to correct issues before they lead to harm.
Risk Assessment And Safe Working Practices
Hounslow Removals will routinely assess the risks associated with household and commercial removals, storage moves and specialist item handling. Key risk areas include manual handling of furniture and boxes, confined or awkward access routes, operation of removal vehicles, loading and unloading at kerbside, traffic and parking issues, and working in adverse weather conditions.
For each job, practical control measures will be implemented such as route checks, parking assessment, safe lifting techniques, use of lifting aids and trolleys, securing loads in vehicles, and use of protective coverings to reduce slips and trips. Where an on-site assessment identifies additional hazards, the team leader will adjust the working method before proceeding.
Manual Handling And Use Of Equipment
Manual handling is a major part of removal work and is a key focus of our safety procedures. Staff are trained in correct lifting and carrying techniques, team lifts, assessing weight and size of items, and recognising when mechanical assistance is required. No employee is expected to lift or move any item they believe to be unsafe or beyond their capability.
Hounslow Removals provides suitable equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, furniture blankets, straps and ramps to reduce manual handling risks. All equipment is checked regularly and removed from service if damaged or defective. Only trained personnel may operate any specialised equipment or larger vehicles.
Vehicles, Driving And Road Safety
Our drivers are expected to drive responsibly and in line with road traffic laws and company procedures. Vehicles must be checked before use, including tyres, lights, brakes and load restraint systems. Loads must be evenly distributed, appropriately secured and within weight limits.
Drivers must follow safe parking and unloading practices at customer locations to protect pedestrians and other road users. Where possible, traffic routes and stopping points will be planned in advance. Mobile devices must not be used while driving and rest breaks should be taken as required to avoid fatigue.
Customer Premises And Public Safety
When working at customer premises, our teams will take care to protect both property and people. This includes keeping access routes clear, managing trip hazards such as ramps and equipment, and using floor protection where appropriate. The team leader will coordinate work so that heavy or bulky items are moved safely and under proper control at all times.
Members of the public and customers will be kept clear of active loading and unloading areas wherever reasonably practicable. Verbal warnings and simple explanations may be given on site where cooperation is needed to maintain a safe environment.
Training, Communication And Review
Hounslow Removals will provide induction training for new starters and ongoing refresher training for existing staff. Topics include manual handling, use of removal equipment, vehicle and road safety, hazard awareness and emergency procedures. Additional training will be delivered when new equipment, vehicles or work methods are introduced.
This Health and Safety Policy will be communicated to all employees, displayed at our premises where appropriate and made available to customers on request. It will be reviewed regularly, and at least annually, to reflect any changes in legislation, best practice or the nature of our removal services. Revisions will be shared with staff and implemented through updated procedures and training.
Commitment To Continual Improvement
Hounslow Removals is committed to continually improving its health and safety performance. By planning work carefully, investing in training and equipment, and encouraging open reporting of concerns, we aim to deliver safe, efficient and professional removal services for every customer we serve.
